A Foundation of Nutrition

A theoretical hierarchy exists for the development of an athlete. It starts with nutrition and moves to metabolic conditioning, gymnastics, weightlifting, and finally sport. This hierarchy largely reflects foundational dependence, skill, and to some degree, time ordering of development. The logical flow is from molecular foundations, cardiovascular sufficiency, body control, external object control, and ultimately mastery and application. This model has greatest utility in analyzing athletes’ shortcomings or difficulties.

We don’t deliberately order these components but nature will. If you have a deficiency at any level of “the pyramid” the components above will suffer.

We are going to be introducing a new service at Sublime, and we are very excited about it.

The majority of people who join our gym have goals of improved body composition and health. The second biggest category are those who want to improve performance in their sport.

We anticipated this a long time prior to opening our doors and have accommodated it very successfully since our opening by running streams of fitness programming which are oriented toward those different goal categories.

The fitness training has been working beautifully. But until now we haven’t found a way to have such a far-reaching effect with our nutrition coaching (which, as you can see, is the foundation of the training pyramid!!)

You see, our approach to nutrition so far has been to periodically host nutrition seminars, and otherwise perform individual assessments and coaching with either Brendan (Precision Nutrition trained nutritionist) or Tenille (Registered Dietitian).

The strength to the seminars has been to get everyone in a room together and, after some initial lecturing, have some great Q & A together. I’ve loved how those have enhanced our community and we are planning another one for this fall.

And the strength to the individualized sessions has, of course, been that they meet the individual where they are at and then can quickly fine-tune the nitty gritty details to get you to your goals.

However, the thing with nutrition is that lasting change means changing habits.

As motivated as you may feel after a seminar or 1-on-1 session, you’ve still got 3-5 meals per day to deal with, around your job, and your social outings, and your sport, and grocery shopping, and travelling, and etc. etc. etc.

Now, with our exercise training approach, I can generally trust that if after a few months of training you went on vacation and visited another gym, or even decided to pick up some rocks on the beach, that you would have the foundation of lifting down-pat enough to do that with safety. This is because, day-after-day, week-after-week, we are practicing these movements and changing your movement HABITS.

Well, just as with exercise training, there are some Fundamentals to nutrition which need constant reinforcement and progressive development.

Introducing PN Coaching

As a PN Certified Coach, Brendan has recently gained access to a world-class nutrition HABIT coaching platform.

When we investigated the PN Coach program we were excited to discover a platform for coaching the same nutritional habits we feel are most important, in a way which would allow us to train you the same way we do in the gym… day-by-day, week-by-week, building on what you’ve learned previously.

As you can see from above, the approach works. But, more importantly, it’s an approach that helps you achieve those results and keep them because you will be learning the habits you need for maintenance and you will also, importantly, be part of a community of people doing the same.

Now, it’s not uncommon to see results like that on the front page of magazines or diet web sites with phrases like “30 pounds in 30 days”. This program takes 1 year.

Yup, one year.

If you’re looking at that and saying, “nope… too long… need my results by November”, then maybe working with a dietitian one-on-one, is a more appropriate avenue. Get the meal plan and follow it to the “T”.

However, if you’re really really interested in learning, once and for all, how to eat for the rest of your life, then one year only makes sense. How to eat on vacation, at the cabin, in the airport, on a busy work day, when visiting relatives who make insanely amazing perogies…

Learn ways that are sane (yes, you can eat and enjoy some cake at your child’s birthday party)… sustainable (like I said, this isn’t just for abs at that destination wedding; this is for life)…. and supportive of being lean, healthy and performing better for the rest of your life.

When you have these foundations down pat, seminars and nutritional consultations can help troubleshoot smaller issues rather than make you feel like your whole life needs an overhaul.

Those who enlist in the program will receive daily email check-ins, lessons, and habit reinforcement from the course for one year. On top of that, your progress will be monitored and supported by Brendan (Sublime’s head coach, and Precision Nutrition Level 1 certified coach… he, in turn, is supported by his lovely wife Tenille, Registered Dietitian).

This course is designed for people who:

1 – feel their lives are too busy to make healthy nutrition choices, and/or

2 – don’t know how or where to get started, and/or

3 – KNOW a lot about nutrition, but do not consistently apply what they know, and/or

4 – tend to be drawn toward radical approaches, but are burnt out on that and need something sustainable to help them get toward their goals

      I am aiming for a batch start in the next 2-3 weeks after releasing a bit more information about what’s included. However, the start date is flexible if you desire to postpone it.
